Tues/Wed Feb 23-24, Poker Flat vocabulary prep

 



In preparation for reading the short story The Outcasts of Polka Flat by Bret Harte, we are reviewing vocabulary as a class.

Your assignment:

      You are to select 10 of the vocabulary words and compose a well-written, gramatically correct, complete sentence that clearly demonstrates an accurate context of the word. This is due by 6 pm Wednesday.

Models: sotto voce (adjective)  low voice....

They didn't want anyone to hear them talking, so they spoke sotto voce.    

             to beguile (verb)-to charm or enchant

Upon reaching the summit of the mountain, they were no longer exhausted by the trek, but were beguiled by the mystical view of valley below.

 Make sure you have checked for capitalization, punctuation and spelling

17.    maudlin- (adjective)- self-pityingly or tearfully sentimental
18.    guileless- (adjective)- innocent              not the same as naive 
19.    recumbent- (adjective)- lying down   
20.  temperance- (noun)- abstinence from an alcoholic drink   
There were temperance organizations in the 19th century, often associated with the woman's rights movement.   Bonus question: why?
